Historic Name FORT GIBSON HISTORIC DISTRICT
Description of Significance FORT GIBSON WAS A UNITED STATES MILITARY POST ESTABLISHED IN 1824. DURING THE 1820S AND 1830S, FORT GIBSON WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MILITARY POSTS ON THE SOUTHWESTERN FRONTIER. IT WAS GARRISONED BY TROOPS WHOSE MISSION IT WAS TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF THE INDIANS REMOVED FROM THE EAST AND TO PROTECT THOSE INDIANS FROM PLAINS INDIAN TRIBES. SEVERAL BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED IN 1824, WITH ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION IN 1834 AND AGAIN IN 1845. IN 1857, THE FORT WAS ABANDONED. IN 1863, IT WAS OCCUPIED BY CONFEDERATE FORCES. AFTER THE WAR, UNITED STATES MILITARY FORCES ONCE AGAIN OCCUPIED FORT GIBSON. SEVERAL NEW BUILDINGS WERE CONSTRUCTED AT THAT TIME. MOST OF THE EXTANT BUILDINGS DATE FROM THAT SECOND PERIOD OF OCCUPATION. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 10/15/1966. NHL DESIGNATION 12/19/1960.
